The Powerscourt International Junior Trophy will commence on the 23rd of October and finish on the 25th. Player´s will have the chance to check out the venue on the 22nd of October and get a feeling for the West Course
Players and their families will be amazed what the estate has to offer. The Powerscourt Estate is located about 40 min from Dublin International Airport within pure nature, where one of Europe’s finest Gardens and Irelands Highest waterfall is located.
Global Junior Golf would like to thank Mr. Gavin Hunt, Golf Manager of Powerscourt Golf Club and his entire team for bringing this event to Ireland to this special place. Junior Golf is an important factor to spread the word about the game of golf. GJ is honored to already give players insight about the upcoming adventure and Mr. Hunt will share his thoughts.
GJG: Mr. Hunt, thank you for your support. How do you feel on bringing a GJG Event to Powerscourt Golf Club?
Mr. Hunt: Powerscourt Golf Club are delighted to be involved with such an important international event for junior golf. We are especially pleased to be chosen as the inaugural venue for an Irish Event on the Global Junior Golf schedule of events for 2019
GJG: Please be so kind and introduce Powerscourt Golf Club and tell us a little bit a bout it´s history.
Mr. Hunt: Nestled in the foothills of the Wicklow Mountains and surrounded by breath-taking views, you will not find many places in the world like Powerscourt Golf Club which was founded by the Slazenger Family in 1996. You feel like you have entered a different world. Since its inception the club has gone from strength to strength playing host to many professional tournaments including the AIB Irish Seniors Open and the Smurfit PGA Championship which was Padraig Harrington´s maiden national professional title.
GJG: The Powerscourt Estate is located within a breathtaking nature. What can the families and players encounter while attending the tournament?
Mr. Hunt: The two championship golf courses designed by Peter McEvoy & David McLay Kidd are situated among the truly magnificent Powerscourt Estate which is home to 1,000 acres of what needs to be seen to be believed. Powerscourt is everything that symbolises Ireland’s natural beauty. The spectacular scenery and facilities have an immediate draw and it’s not difficult to see why Powerscourt Estate is one of Irelands most visited attractions. In addition to two championship golf courses the Estate also boasts, the highest waterfall in Ireland, the world famous Powerscourt Gardens, the luxurious Hotel and now the latest addition wiht Powerscourt Distillery.
GJG: What green speed can the players expect?
Mr. Hunt: Throughout the season our dedicated greenkeeping team aim to maintain a green speed between 9.5 & 10.5 on the stimp meter.
GJG: What are your favorite holes on the West Course?
Mr. Hunt: The West course designed by David McLay Kidd of Bandon Dunes fame boasts many truly panoramic holes but it has to be said that each of the par threes are a fantastic test of shot making ability from a flick of a wedge on the 6thto a strong long iron on the 17th. Level par for all the par threes is always a sign of a positive day’s golf.
GJG: Where do you believe will the tournament be decided? Which are the “watch out holes”?
Mr. Hunt: The key to scoring well on the West course at Powerscourt is the greens. If you putt well you will score well. Large undulating greens with subtle breaks will test golfers of all abilities. Panoramic holes such as the 4th& 7thwith backdrops of the Sugarloaf mountain, the second shots on the 10th, tee shot on 13thand 16thwill all determine the outcome of what we hope will be an exciting tournament at Powerscourt Golf Club.
Once again thank you for your great support to junior golf and we are looking forward to the first edition of the Powerscourt International Junior Trophy!
