The Portuguese Intercollegiate Open are returning to Penha Longa Golf Resort!
The season 2018 of Global Junior Golf kicks off just 30 min away from Lisbon at the precious Penha Longa Golf Resort.
Players have the chance once again to start there where years ago the European Tour stopped by. The historic panorama with the world heritage monastry overlooks the the Atlantic course and just 3 min walking distance away players can enjoy one of the best hotels of Portugal.
The Penha Longa Golf Resort is operated by Ritz Carlton and is looking forward to welcome the players from around the world.
Global Junior Golf would like to take the chance and interview Mr. Hugo Pinheiro, to give some inside of the Penha Longa Golf Resort:
GJG: Mr. Pinheiro, welcome again to the Global Junior Golf family. In 5 months the Portuguese Intercollegiate Open will come back to Penha Longa Golf Resort. Why did you decide to bring back the event back?
HP: GJG 2017 was such a successful event that it would be impossible not to host it again. We felt the need to continue to support this International event, and showcase our Resort to all the participants.
GJG: A lot of players will be returning, but please introduce Penha Longa Golf Resort to the ones having their first appearance:
HP: Penha Longa Resort is the perfect retreat for anyone who wants to experience a luxury vacation that combines relaxation & wellness, exceptional gastronomy and golf. Recognized as one of the best Golf Resorts in Europe, Penha Longa is a must for any golf enthusiasts.
GJG: Please tell us about the course design. Which are the holes a player needs to watch out:
HP: The course is a typical Trent Jones Jr. course, with elevated tees and greens. The 18-holes of parkland, located within the Sintra-Cascais National Park, are a challenge for every level of handicap. For sure the holes to watch out would be #15 and #16. At just two holes, several extra strokes can be added to the scorecard.
GJG: What is your favorite hole at Penha Longa Golf Resort?
HP: My favorite hole is number 16. With breathtaking views from the tee, it’s a hole where you need to be aggressive if you want to score at least a PAR. A long par 4, with a second shot to an elevated and narrowed green, with not much space to go both right or left of the fairway.
GJG: Penha Longa is known for all year around fast green? Which speed can we expect and what preparations will apply?
HP: Speed of the greens may go up to 10 feet on the stimpmeter. We do an all year round maintenance program to the greens, which includes not only the usual hollow coring, but also several verticut actions, combined with light top dress. Rolling the greens is also carried out on a regular basis.
GJG: Penha Longa Golf Resort combines a state of the art golf course and with a five star Ritz Carlton resorts. Please explain what is so special about the whole facility?
HP: As I mentioned previously, Penha Longa Resort offers a variety of experiences that go from gourmet cuisine to sports. In addition to the 27 spectacular golf holes set within historic ruins, we have 8 different restaurants including one with a Michelin Star, 3 pools (1 indoor, and 2 outdoor) and a Spa and Wellness centre. Once the retreat for the Portuguese Royal Family, Penha Longa also encompasses a stunning nineteenth century palace originally founded as a monastery in the fourteenth century.
GJG: What is a must see place while the players and the families visit Sintra?
HP: Walking through Sintra village is like being inside a fairytale story. With its mist-soaked forests and glittering palaces and castles, Sintra is really one of a kind. Every corner is full of history ready to be unveiled. Do not miss the famous “Travesseiros”, the traditional sweet pastries from Sintra!
GJG: What do you think will be the winning scores girls and boys?
HP: Depending on the weather conditions, I think 1 or 2 under par for boys, and 10 over par for girls will be enough to win it.
We are looking forward to meet you all in Portugal! Save travels…
